NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 13 – The High Court has declared sections of Elections Act unconstitutional and of no legal effect.
The ruling by Justice Anthony Mrima effectively throws out degree requirement for Members of Parliament.
Members of the National Assembly in 2017 amended Section 22 of the Election Act that prescribes minimum academic qualifications for lawmakers.
Mrima had suspended Section 22 of the Election Act, pending the hearing of a petition filed by four residents of Narok, who argue that the law is discriminatory.
