Africa should safeguard Mali from imminent collapse

I have spoken against any form of conflict on the continent of Africa. The capture of the African Union Commission by France has left Africa on a cliff-hanger security situation.

The recent avalanche of Coup d’etats in West Africa and the Sahel Region may destabilize the region. Ostensibly, the feeble nature of the response from regional bodies and their inability to severely punish and deal with the coup makers have created a dangerous precedent.

That has the propensity to encourage and embolden other would-be coup plotters to take a similar path. If this craze is not put to a halt, we are going to have an overabundance of pariah states. Of consequence, weaker regimes cannot serve as edifices against external intrusion.

Of more concern is the frangible situation in Mali, the crisis in Bamako will have a significant impact on the security situation in the entire region of the Sahel.

The continent runs the risk of Jihadi groups using it as a doorway to spread the tentacles of violence in the Sub-Region and into the hinterlands.

On the whole, the volatile situation in Mali threatens the fight against terrorism, Jihadism and violent extremism in the Sahel, especially considering the already fractured and frail political leadership in the region.

Africa has to stand with the people of Mali, it will be a hefty price to pay for Mali to lose the war against the jihadist groups. It would have a calamitous effect on the security situation in the entire region.

The foretaste and hunch is clear, the likelihood of replication across weaker states in the Sahel and the broader West African sub-region cannot be overlooked.
