NAIROBI, Kenya, May 24 – Parliament is on Thursday scheduled to host the 18th Edition of the National Annual Prayer Breakfast at the Senate Grounds.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to grace the occasion which will be hosted by the two Speakers of the bicameral Parliament – Justin Muturi (National Assembly) and Kenneth Lusaka (Senate).
Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and top ranking government officials are also expected to attend.
While confirming the event, Morompi ole Ronkei who coordinates the National Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee noted that they are happy that the event is happening this year, but expressed disappointment that the former event’s co-chair, the late Paul Koinange, will not be there to attend.
“We are happy that as per our tradition, we shall be able to hold the event on the last Thursday of May. We’re are however saddened that this year, the late Koinange will not be coordinating the organization of this event with us. But his legacy lives on,” he said.
The late Kiambaa legislator passed on in March 2021 due to COVID-19 related complications.
The annual event which is traditionally held on the last Thursday of May resumes after a brief hiatus last year due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year’s prayers will be held both virtually and physically with only a small group of about 100 attendees invited to physically be at the event.
Unlike in the past, where a lot of activity is normally scheduled for the event’s program, this year the ceremony will only run for two hours from 8am.
It will, however, be streamed on Parliament’s Facebook page and local television stations through the media’s Joint Production Initiative.
The National Prayer Breakfast is an annual ecumenical event offered under the auspices of the Speakers of the National Assembly and the Senate; and organized by a group of dedicated volunteers who make up the National Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee.
The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast is to meet, engage, interact and together pray for the nation in the company of fellow leaders from all sectors of society.
