Kenya records 183 new COVID cases

NAIROBI, Kenya July 7 – Kenya recorded 183 COVID-19 cases Tuesday, raising the case load in the country to 8,250.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the new cases were detected from 2,061 samples. 177 of the new cases are Kenyans while 6 are foreigners.

The youngest patient from the new cases is a 4-year-old baby and the oldest 79 years.

“I am urging everyone to take personal responsibility because that is the only way to flatten the curve,” he said, when he announced the new figures, a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta declared a phased re-opening after a partial lockdown since March when the first case was detected in the country. A night curfew is still in force until August 6.

So far, the Ministry of Health has tested 193,455 samples across the country- with Nairobi and Mombasa recording the highest number.

Kagwe said 90 patients were also discharged on Tuesday from various hospitals, raising the number of recoveries in the country to 2,504.

Kagwe also announced three more fatalities, raising the number of deaths so far to 167.

“Most of the people we are losing are patients with pre-existing conditions,” said Dr Patrick Amoth, the acting Director-General of Health at the ministry.
