Prof. Stephen Kiama tapped to take up VC post at UON

Prof. Stephen Kiama’s term will start Monday, January 6, 2020.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 5 – The University of Nairobi Council has announced the appointment of Prof. Stephen Kiama as the new Vice-Chancellor to take over from Peter Mbithi whose bid for a second term failed mid last year.

The Vice Chancellor vacancy arose after the University Council rejected a request by Prof. Mbithi for a second term.

Kiama who has served as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Human Resource and Administration will hold his new post for a period of five-year term.

In a letter dated January 5, 2020, UoN Council Chairperson Prof. Julia Ojiambo said Prof Kiama’s term will start Monday, January 6, 2020.

The Public Service Commission had shortlisted 8 candidates after it attracted 14 applicants.

The other were Professors Isaac Mbeche, Madara Ogot, Patricia Mbote, Prof. Solomon Shibairo, Prof. Kareithi Wanjiru Elijah Omwenga.Prof. Eng. Bernard Njoroge.

Mbithi proceeded on terminal leave starting July 6, 2019 after the after the University Council rejected a request by Prof Mbithi for a second term.

Prof Mbithi was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor on December 1, 2014 and took up the position on January 6, 2015 for a five-year term and which ends in January 2020.

The law requires that vice-chancellors indicate in writing to the council their interest for re-appointment at least six months before expiry of a running contract.
