LAMU, Kenya, Jan 2 – Three people were on Thursday morning killed by suspected Al Shabaab militants when a bus they were travelling in was attacked along Lamu-Garsen Highway.

The bus was travelling from Mombasa to Lamu when the suspected militants flagged it down at Nyongoro area.

The driver of the ill-fated vehicle refused to stop and sped off, forcing the militants to shoot at the bus several times. It is reported that he suspected the group could be terrorists. He sped off, forcing the attackers to spray the bus with bullets.

“I can confirm three people were killed. Several others have been injured,” said Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia.

He said they are yet to establish the exact number of passengers that were in that bus.

“We are looking for the passengers’ list. We want to know how many people were in that bus and if everyone has been accounted for,” he said.

The attackers are said to have then fled into the forest. The three who are reported dead include; the bus conductor. He is said to have died on the spot from gunshot wounds. The names of victims are yet to be released.

The death toll could go higher considering the nature of injuries sustained, according to reports.

“We have since launch a man-hunt to pursue the militants,” said Macharia.
