NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 1 – Police have nabbed a middle-aged woman linked to the theft of newborn babies at Pumwani Maternity Hospital.
The woman was arrested on Saturday night at 9 pm while attempting to steal newborn babies. Detectives who searched her car found the body of a baby wrapped in a sack hidden in the boot.
The lady is set to be charged in court on Monday.
“Detectives want to know whether she has accomplices,” a Nairobi County official told Capital News adding that “they also want to know whether she has been involved in past cases of child stealing.”
This is the latest case in a hospital notoriously know for child theft, the recent incident being last month when another woman was arrested for stealing a baby and carried him on a backpack.
The incident happened as the mother was processing her discharge.
In July, a childless nurse was arrested for allegedly attempting to steal her friend’s newborn baby.
The maternity is known for attracting women from humble backgrounds, who are often a soft target to criminals preying on young babies.
