KISII, Kenya, Dec 18 – The Kisii Main Prison in south-west Kenya on Wednesday rolled out an initiative geared at promoting reconciliation with the goal of integrating inmates to their respective communities once released from jail.
Francis Apondo, the officer in charge of the facility said the program provided an opportunity for inmates to bond with their facility members and those they wronged.
“This open day is a special day for the inmates to prepare them to face their families and get acceptance from the family once they finish prison term,” said the officer.
He However noted with concern that those who are through with their terms find it difficult to get back to the community.
Family members and community in large do not accept reformed inmates often, he said.
“Two inmates were recently released from this prison, but they begged to stay because they believe they will be outcasts in the community,” Apondo added.
He said the open day provided an opportunity for the inmates to win back the trust and acceptance from those they wronged.
“Let the society accept them once they are out of prisons for them they have completely changed and fit into the society,” said Apondo.
