Jamhuri Day celebrations get underway at Nyayo Sports Complex

The event will feature military parades by the three divisions of the Kenya Defence Forces – the army, navy and air force/PSCU

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 12 – The 56th national Jamhuri Day celebrations are underway at the Nyayo National Stadium.

President Uhuru Kentatta arrived at the complex at 11.10 am on Thursday accompanied by Frist Lady Margaret, shortly after Deputy President received this year’s special guest Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley.

Other officials attending the event include military commanders among the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Samson Mwathethe, Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiangi (Interior) Monica Juma (Foreign Affairs) Raychelle Omamo (Defence) and Sisily Kariuki (Health).

Opposition leader Raila Odinga and former Vice Presidents Kalonzo Musyoka and Musalia Mudavadi were also in attendance.

The Jamhuri Day celebrations are held annually to commemorate the day Kenya became a republic.

Kenya was granted self-governance by the British colonial regime on December 12, 1963, a year before the country gained independence with founding leader Mzee Jomo Kenyatta as Head of State.

Visiting Barbados PM Mottley will deliver a special message as the designated special guest during this year’s event.

The event will also feature military parades by the three divisions of the Kenya Defence Forces – the army, navy and air force.

Surinamese Foreign Minister Pollack Beighle will represent the South American nation as special envoy.
