Court of Appeal Judge Otieno Odek found dead in his Kisumu house

KISUMU, Kenya Dec 16 – Court of Appeal Judge Otieno Odek was on Monday found dead in his house at an apartment in Kisumu.

A judicial officer in Kisumu told Capital FM News that the Judge did not report to work on Monday morning, and his phones were not answered prompting them to look for him.

A report was then made to police who broke the door to his house where his body was found on bed. His phones were intact.

A police officer who saw the judge’s body said there was no signs of struggle, but an investigation will be launched to establish the cause of death.

A pathologist was called to the house by police to examine the body before it is taken to the mortuary.

He lived on the second floor of Groovehut Apartments, near Kisumu Central police station.

A caretaker at the furnished apartments said the judge arrived on Friday and never left his house. His official car a Toyota Landcruiser was parked outside.

Chief Justice David Maraga described Odek as a “distinguished Judge but also a prolific legal scholar who was widely published and celebrated across the continent and beyond.”

Justice Odek served as the Director of the Judiciary Training Institute from 2016 to 2018, having become a Judge of the Court of Appeal in 2012.
