Chinese companies under KCETA donates to education centre in Mathare slum

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 11 – Christmas came early for students of MCEDO Beijing School in Nairobi’s Mathare slum, following donations from various Chinese companies operating in Kenya.

The companies under the umbrella of the Kenya China Economic and Trade Association (KCETA) donated Sh1.4 million to cater for needs of the 526 students at the education centre operated by Mathare Community Education and Development Organization (MCEDO), a Community Based Organization in the heart of Mathare slum.

KCETA’s Chairman Li Changgui said the gesture is aimed at ensuring the children enjoy the festivities period besides supporting activities of the centre that was founded in 2000 to cater for the less privileged in the society.

“I hope this will be the biggest gift for the children,” Changgui said, and urged them to become useful members of the society in future so as to contribute in the progress and development of Kenya.”

The institution’s headmaster Benedict Chege lauded the Chinese companies’ gesture and urged them to continue supporting their activities.

“The Mathare child has been suffering and no one to celebrate with, some of the parents cannot provide for them,” he said, “I am glad you came through.”

Esnas Kisia, a student sponsored by the organization, praised Chinese companies for providing sports equipment to enable them take part in games.

“I would like to say thank you for the balls, they will help us to improve our skills in football,” she said.
