NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 23 – Nine landlords from Balozi Estate in Kitengela were on Monday set to appear before the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) over the discharge of raw sewage.

According to the Authority, summons on them followed an inspection of the houses along Balozi road in Kitengela by a team led by the Acting Director-General Mamo B. Mamo.

The landlords are accused of discharging raw sewage to a public road.

“NEMA has summoned 9 flat owners/landlords in Kitengela town, Kajiado County to appear at the NEMA HQ on Mon 23rd December. After inspection led by AG. DG Mamo B Mamo, the 9 flats along Balozi road were found to discharge raw sewage into the road,” a statement from the authority stated.

Part III of the Environmental Management and Coordination Regulations outlaws the discharge of any poison, toxic, noxious or obstructing matter.

According to the Water Quality Regulations 2006, companies discharging into the environment are supposed to apply for the annual Effluent Discharge Licenses (EDL) from NEMA after undertaking an annual audit.

Those discharging into the sewer line are supposed to apply for discharge permits from Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company if within the city or in the respective counties.

On 15th May 2019, NEMA board of management led inspections within Industrial Area in Nairobi to ensure compliance.

During the inspection, one company was closed for lacking proper pre-treatment system hence discharging untreated waste into the public sewer line.
