MAKUENI, Kenya, Dec 18 – Two buses operated by Modern Coast Express Limited were detained by police at Sultan Hamud in Makueni Wednesday morning, amid uncertainty over the status of a suspension by National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA).
Makueni police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said 90 passengers on board the two buses headed to Nairobi from Mombasa were affected.
He said the police was still enforcing a suspension imposed by the NTSA on Thursday, December 12 following a tragic accident involving two buses operated by the transport company. Seven people died.
NTSA is yet to comment on a letter cited by Modern Coast Express Limited when the company announced resumption of service on Tuesday.
The agency, in the letter dated December 17, is understood to have cleared 43 out of 73 inspected buses.
“In view of the above stated progress, the authority has decided to lift the ban on the 43 vehicles that have passed the inspection. Other vehicles still undergoing inspection will be cleared once they have completed the inspection,” the letter reads.
To our customers, we would like to clarify that we received the letter below from @ntsa_kenya lifting our suspension hence resumption of operation. Please note that the earlier communication was based on the letter below.
