Politician, Asst Chief nabbed following Marsabit killings

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 11 – A politician, two administrators are among four people who have been arrested following inter-communal conflict on a settlement in Jardesa area of Marsabit County.

Police Spokesman Charles Owino says in a statement that police are holding the unnamed local politician, an Assistant Chief, retired Chief and a driver caught transporting one of the injured militiamen to hospital.

Owino said so far an ongoing police operation has been able to recovery 154 head of cattle and 70 goats.

“A multi-agency operation to pursue the criminals and recover the illicit arms in their possession is still on and we are urging members of the public within the area who are in unlawful possession of firearms to surrender them to lawful authority with immediate effect,” he said

He said they have further engaged local community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence and dissuade against retaliatory actions.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i on Friday gave illegal firearm holders in Marsabit County 24 hours to surrender them or face forceful disarmament.

The CS said the government will not tolerate politicians who fuel attacks.

He spoke days after 10 people, among them two police officers, were killed in two separate attacks in the county.

The first attack occurred in Kukuto area where three people were killed by armed bandits ambushed their vehicle.

The second incident saw seven people, including two police officers, killed in Jardesa.
