Security enhanced in Mombasa for Mashujaa Day fete

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 – Security was heightened in Mombasa ahead of Mashujaa celebrations set to be held in Mombasa, authorities said.

The event to be held at the Mama Ngina Water Front will be presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta, attended by hundreds of dignitaries.

Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho said all security arrangements were in place to guarantee safety.

“I can confirm that everything at the Mama Ngina Waterfront Park is ready for Mashujaa Day celebrations. Since we expect a high turnout, we have created a space big enough to accommodate all Kenyans who are planning to join us in marking this momentous day,” he said.

Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata urged Kenyans to cooperate with security agencies, while assuring that security agencies are adequately prepared.

“The public is advised to be vigilant and report to the police any suspicious-looking individuals, incidences/activities or abandoned luggage,” he said.

The celebration will be held under the theme ‘Nchi Yangu, Jukumu Langu, Mimi ni Shujaa’ (My Nation, My duty, I am a hero).

Among those invited to the event is World Marathon Champion Eliud Kipchoge who broke the 2-hour marathon barrier in Vienna, Austria with 2:59.40.

Kipchoge and his team were flown to Mombasa by the Kenya Forest Service.

Others attending the event are various government officials, diplomats among others.
