NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 2 – A section of Coast MPs now want Kenya Ferry and Kenya Coast Guard managers to take responsibility and resign for Sunday’s ferry tragedy which claimed a mother and her daughter whose vehicle slid off the ferry and plunged into the ocean.
Likoni MP Mishi Mboko led her colleagues Abdullswamad Nassir and Khatib Mwashetani in condemning the incident, and demanded action on officials responsible.
Mboko spoke as House Speaker Justin Muturi granted her request to suspend House Business so that MPs can deliberate on the glaring safety gaps of the ferries which ply across the Indian Ocean channel.
Mvita MP, Nassir demanded for a Parliamentary probe on the state of the vessels as outlined by the Auditor General’s report which accused the ferry management of risking the lives of people for not following International Safety Management standards in the ferry management.
Mwashetani who is the Lunga-Lunga MP questioned the capability of the Kenya Ferry lifeguards and divers when such disaster happened, while noting that they are yet to retrieve the bodies.
