Moi University unveils locally assembled computers to boost local ICT market

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 22–Moi University has partnered with jp.ik, a Portuguese Information and Communication Technologies company to unveil a range of premium ICT devices assembled at the university’s technologies Digital Assembly Plant.

The plant is based in Rivatex Complex that was acquired recently by the state university.

The devices launched under the brand name MU consist of desktop computers, laptops, servers and NUCs that are targeting higher education students, government as well as private enterprises.

Jerome Ochieng, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology who spoke at the launch on Tuesday acknowledged the university’s innovation and urged Kenyans and counties to support local ICT

“It is our joy and pride as a government when we see local universities taking up the challenge of growing manufacturing in this country which is one of the pillars in our big 4 agenda,” he said.

Ochieng urged Kenyans to buy locally assembled computers because buying Kenya ultimately builds Kenya.
He also asked the County Governments to support this initiative and order their ICT devices directly from the MU Digital Assembly Plant.

Nick Broda, jp.ik’s Head of Sales Worldwide, pledged to work with local and regional companies that have a wide distribution network of consumer goods and an interest in distributing and selling ICT devices.

“As we continue to develop our sales channel, We have done our market research and established that there is a big market for these products and are fully invested in developing this market,” said Broda.

He emphasized on the ability to customize the devices based on customers’ demand which gives them a competitive edge over what is already in the market.
