Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa arrested over chaos that led to fatal shooting

Vocal Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa addresses the press Tuesday evening, October 15. She accused the ODM candidate in the forthcoming Ganda ward by-election of campaigning beyond the legally stipulated time-frame/COURTESY

MOMBASA, Kenya Oct 16 – Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa was due in court Wednesday morning over chaos in Ganda Ward where one person was shot dead during a meeting by a candidate for the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Ganda Ward by-election.

Mombasa Port Police chief Patrick Lobole confirmed that Jumwa was arrested on Tuesday night and taken to the station where she spent the night, but it still remained unclear what charges she was likely to face.

“She was brought in last (Tuesday) night, but they are now heading to court,” Lobole told our Correspondent in Mombasa on Wednesday morning.

Jumwa is said to have stormed a meeting organised by ODM candidate Reuben Katana at his home, where chaos ensued, with locals accusing her driver of shooting a person.

Organisers of the meeting accused her of disrupting the meeting between Katana and ODM agents for the by-election scheduled for Thursday.

Jumwa is a member of ODM but pledges loyalty to the ruling Jubilee Party, often accompanying Deputy President William Ruto to political meetings.

A police report seen by Capital FM News indicated that it was not certain who shot the person identified as Ngumbao Jola, an uncle to the ODM candidate. He succumbed to injuries at the Malindi General Hospital.

“We want an investigation carried out. There are some who say that it is the police who shot at the man while others say it is my bodyguards. We want to know the truth,” Jumwa said soon after the incident.
