Kenyatta, Ruto hail Kipchoge for stunning performance in Vienna sub-two hour marathon

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 12 – President Uhuru Kenyatta is among Kenyan leaders who have conveyed their congratulatory messages to marathon world record holder, Eliud Kipchoge after he broke the two-hour marathon barrier during the INEOS159 challenge in Vienna, Austria, after clocking 1hr 59min and 40secs.

In a statement through the Presidential Strategic Communications Unit (PSCU), President Kenyatta said Kipchoge had made Kenya and its people proud and set precedence to be emulated by future generations.

“Hearty congratulations Eliud. You have done it, my brother. Your win against all odds today will inspire tens of future generations to dream big and to aspire for greatness,” reads a statement dispatched by PSCU on Saturday.

Deputy President Ruto who was part of a Kenyan contingent that cheered on Kipchoge in Vienna said Kenyans and other citizens of the world were proud of the achievement because it proved that humanity is pushing the limits of what can be achieved.

“History has been made and we are very proud as Kenyans and as citizens of this globe because humanity is pushing the limits of what can be achieved,” said Ruto.

Kenya’s opposition party leader Raila Odinga on his part took to social media to congratulate the marathon icon stating that Kenya had become greater because of him.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi also applauded the world record holder as the new Neil Amstrong of the 21st Century.

Kipchoge was working with 41 pacemakers in the race that kicked off at 9.15 Saturday morning, Kipchoge thrilled thousands of fans, among them his wife Grace and Deputy President William Ruto when he crossed the tape with 20 seconds to spare.

Speaking after the race, Kipchoge thanked his global fan-base for cheering him on in the limit-breaking race.

“I feel good for making history in the s insport. I did this to inspire many people; to tell them that no human is limited. I’m expecting more athletes all over the world to run under two hours after today,” he said.
