NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 17 – Jubilee Party has endorsed the return of embattled Nairobi County Speaker Beatrice Elachi at City Hall days after a section of Members of County Assembly led by Majority Leader Abdi Guyo challenged her reinstatement.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters on Wednesday, Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju asked the MC’s to respect the law after the court reinstated Elachi who had been unceremoniously ousted in September 2018 following a series of unresolved issues.
“We have agreed as far as Jubilee Party is concerned we are going to respect the rule of law, we discussed the issue of Speaker Madam Elachi and we agreed that even those of us who maybe having alternative with respect to her position to allow the rule of law to prevail,” said Tuju.
Tuju also announced that the members will be meeting with Elachi, with a view of ironing out their differences before they resume their sittings on October 29.
The assembly’s besieged Majority Leader Abdi Guyo will retain his position as consultations to reach an agreement on the proposed changes on the assembly’s leadership go on.
“If there is to be any actions about the leadership, we are going to follow the constitution of the party, as for now status quo at the county assembly remains until the party pronounces itself. We’re having a lot of consultations and gathering the opinions of the MCAs so that we can move forward,” Tuju said.
Some of the members who spoke to Capital FM News said they are satisfied by the party’s decision and are ready to work together for the benefit of city residents.
“It’s about leadership of Nairobi, no personal interest and I think today’s resolutions are fair enough,” said Patricia Mutheu, MCA Mlango Kubwa.
“We are happy about today’s meeting with our Secretary General, we also welcome the meeting with the Speaker so that we can resolve issues,” stated Kayole’s Jeremiah Themedu.
Speaker Elachi in a rejoinder on Wednesday afternoon said that she was happy with the party’s decision.
“I welcome the conclusions arrived at by the party and I will abide by them,” she said.
On meeting the Jubilee MCAs, Elachi said she will to seek advice from the Speaker of Senate.
“At the Assembly am the Speaker of both Jubilee and ODM MCAs, therefore I will make a communication after I get guidance from the Speaker of the Senate, otherwise am not opposed to any meeting,” said Elachi.
