NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 15 – Police Inspector General Hilary Mutyambai will now launch a probe into graft allegations in the Immigration Department after a damning exposé aired on Citizen Television Sunday, a meeting convened by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi on Tuesday resolved.
Mutyambai will submit a file to the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji, who also attended the meeting, within 14 days.
“The Government undertakes to ensure that justice is done for all without fear or favour,” Interior Ministry said in a statement to newsrooms on Tuesday.
Members of the public have been urged to offer any information that will help in expediting the case to forward it to the National Police Service Director of International Affairs Unit, Charlton Mureithi.
The exposé is centered around three members of a wealthy family, who are engaged in an ugly contest for property, with the conspirator – Nisha Jayantilal (a niece) – plotting to allegedly have his uncle Dillip Bakrania and aunt Hansa Bakrania deported so that she can take over businesses he co-owned with her late father.
Speaking during the launch of diversion and plea-bargaining guidelines on Tuesday, the DPP said those who will be found culpable will be prosecuted.
He assured foreigners in the country of their safety saying the matter will be probed, to the conclusion.
“Foreigners are very safe in this country,” he told journalists.
“We cannot accept such incidences to happen, but we cannot also condemn anyone until the investigations are over.”
Those mentioned in the exposé include Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua, Director of Immigration Alex Muteshi, Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa and other security officers all based in Nairobi.
Muteshi, while acknowledging that a Sh1 million offer was made to him, denied receiving the money.
Also mentioned in the investigative report is Nairobi head of Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Bernard Nyakwaka said to have been probing the matter.
Aladwa is accused of receiving a bribe to pay senior police and immigration officials to avert what was then an imminent deportation of Dillip Bakrania.
“I was not given any money,” he said during an interview with Citizen TV Investigative journalist Purity Mwombia.
