NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 30 – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned four major parties contesting in the November 7 Kibra parliamentary by-election over violence witnessed at the weekend.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Jubilee Party (JP), Amani National Congress (ANC) and FORD-Kenya were required to appear before Beatrice Muli, the Returning Officer in charge of the Kibra poll Wednesday afternoon.

Muli said the parties are accused of diverting from their approved campaign schedules causing inter party conflict among voters.

“It was in the media, that there was violence witnessed across some parts of the constituencies; ANC and Ford-Kenya have filed their complaint. And this afternoon we have summoned four parties the four parties that were involved over the weekend because there was a slight diversion in their campaign schedule,” she said during a briefing on the preparations of the mini-poll.

The violence occurred as party leaders Raila Odinga (ODM), Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Moses Wetang’ula (Ford Kenya) criss-crossed the constituency to drum up support for Imran Okoth, Eliud Owalo and Khamisi Butichi respectively.

During the Sunday incidents, Mudavadi had his rally in Kamukunji area disrupted when a group of youths emerged and started hurling stones and bottles at his vehicle.

With him was Owalo, Sabatia MP Alfred Agoi and other party officials.

Police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the youths who were now charging at ANC supporters.

The standoff between ODM and Ford Kenya over the venue also resulted in violence and it lasted for some minutes. One person was injured.
