Capital FM breakfast presenters set new 28-hour radio marathon record

Capital FM’s breakfast presenters Amina Abdalla (left) and Fareed Khimani (right)  have set the Kenyan record of a 28-hour marathon for the longest running radio show which ended Thursday at 10am/CFM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 31 – Inspired by Eliud Kipchoge, the first human to ever run a marathon under 2 hours, Capital FM Kenya’s breakfast presenters Amina Abdi and Fareed Khimani on Thursday set a 28-hour marathon record, first ever in Kenya and Africa.

The marathon radio program started on Wednesday and ended at 10am Thursday with their voices still fresh and full of energy.

“We did it,” in unison, the two dynamic presenters signed out, amid cheers from colleagues at the leading FM station.

The longest ever radio show record is held by an Italian DJ who lasted a total of 183 hours, or just over a week, in May 2009, breaking the Guinness World Record.

Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles broke the record at 8.30 in the morning of March 18, 2009 as Moyles and on-air partner Dave Vitty, aka ‘Comedy Dave’, passed the 51.5-hour mark, the BBC reported.

“I now understand having so many people supporting you. It is so funny that starting this, we did not think it was important until it gained the momentum,” Amina said.

Her co-host Khimani said “it was a good bonding experience for Amina and I. This in honour of Eliud Kipchoge.

This rare achievement even got Capital Group Chairman Dr. Chris Kirubi drop by to congratulate them, declaring “I am very proud of you two, you have done us proud.”

Dr Kirubi, who is also a DJ in the mid-morning Fuse show, said he was elated to be part of a station of firsts, “this is incredible. We are truly the station of choice.”

Danny Munyi, Capital FM Kenya’s Programmes Director said, “we wanted to try something new to test our patience and endurance. I am glad we did it.”

Fellow directors Bernard Momanyi (Editorial), Farida Idris (Sales), Grace Nyambura (Finance) and David Muba of Digital all said they were proud of the new achievement and standards set by the two presenters.

“I know it was not easy but you guys have done it. That’s how we struggle in the field to succeed, big up and good job Amina and Fareed,” Wanyama said.
