NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 28- Those sitting on Kenya Railways reserve land within Nairobi and its environs have been given until October 30 to vacate or face eviction, the government said.
Through a public notice issued on Friday, the management of Kenya Railways said the move is aimed at paving the way for the revitalization of Nairobi commuter network.
“We hereby notify all persons who have settled on the Railway Reserve land to vacate in order to give way for the implementation of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service master plan,” reads part of the notice.
The management said that encroachment has posed several challenges to railway operations and compromised safety standards resulting to derailments, delays and vandalism.
The corporation is also in the process of demolishing all illegal structures on Railway Reserve land countrywide.
This includes structures along the Mombasa- Kisumu-Malaba railway corridor, Nakuru- Kisumu, Voi- Taveta, Nairobi-Nanyuki, Gilgil- Nyahururu, Kisumu- Butere, Eldoret- Kitale, Konza- Magadi branch lines among others.
Those in possession of illegal title deeds for land belonging to the Kenya Railways have also been asked to surrender them by October 30.
“We also urge any person with knowledge of illegal title deeds on the Kenya Railways land and property that is in possession of other persons to report to the Managing Director Kenya Railways,” reads the notice.
The Kenya Railways Corporation early this year submitted to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission about 500 cases of its parcels of land that have been irregularly acquired and asked for an investigation to be undertaken.
