NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 16 – Another suspect was arrested Monday in connection with the Sh72 million ATM robbery, detectives said, and announced the recovery of Sh2.8 million part of the loot.

He was identified as John Kamau Mulei, a brother to Bernard Mwendwa—another suspect who was picked up on Thursday, according to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti.

“We have the suspect in custody and money has been recovered from him, a total of Sh2.8 million,” Kinoti said of the arrest by the Special Crime Prevention Unit (SPCU) officers.

He said the officers were led to Kalumoni in Machakos County where the money was recovered in the house of the two suspects’ grandmother.

“No criminal will rest or have peace after committing a crime,” Kinoti declared.
This brings to close toSh10 million the amount of money recovered so far, after three Administration Police officers were arrested two weeks ago with a total of Sh7 million.

The three have since been charged with others including, mechanics, bank staff and G4S officials linked to the robbery that occurred in Nairobi West’s Standard Chartered Bank ATM.

Mechanics were arrested as they painted a vehicle believed to have been stolen and used to transport the money.

The money was stolen when police officers assigned to escort G4S staff with the money, turned to be robbers and stole 13 bags with Sh72 million which was being replenished into a Standard Chartered Bank ATM.

7 G4S officials who were with the officers who were escorting them claimed that they were ordered to surrender the money as soon as they arrived at the ATM at 6 am.

But they were all arrested and charged.
