NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 9 – Six more suspects are due in court on Monday over the Sh72 million ATM heist at Standard Chartered Bank in Nairobi.
The suspects include two police officers, mechanics, bank staff and G4S officials.
Police intend to ask the court to allow them more time to detain the suspects as investigations go on.
Police say they have since recovered Sh7 million out of the total amount that was stolen.
The two officers, an administration officer and his general duty colleague, are believed to be part of a gang that conspired to steal the money during a routine replenishing of Standard Chartered Bank’s ATM in Nairobi West.
Director of Criminal Investigations Director George Kinoti on Saturday said the first suspect, Chris Ayenda Machogu, led the detectives from Kisii town to Kendu Bay where his accomplice identified as Vincent Wycliff Owuor was arrested.
A vehicle believed to have been stolen was also recovered.
On Thursday morning, men posing as police officers stole 13 bags with Sh72 million which was being replenished into a Standard Chartered Bank ATM in Nairobi West by G4S officials in Nairobi.
The money was in transit from G4S headquarters along Witu road to an ATM in Nairobi West belonging to Standard Chartered Bank.
7 G4S officials who were with the officers who were escorting them claimed that they were ordered to surrender the money as soon as they arrived at the ATM at 6am.
But they were all arrested and charged.
Empty cash boxes were on Friday morning found in a coffee plantation in Ruiru.
According to police, G4S Head of Escort, Wilfred Nyambane, reported that the G4S employees had left the headquarters in two vehicles with three men they thought were cash-in-transit officers escorting them.
