KISUMU, Kenya Sep 22 – Three Kenyan fishermen in Homa Bay County were arrested by Ugandan forces late Saturday, on accusations of possessing undersized fish.

The county police commander Esther Serenoy said the fishermen were going to sell their fish in Uganda when they were detained.

She said her office was in contact with Ugandan authorities over the matter.

The fish valued at Sh1 million was also confiscated by the Ugandan authorities.

Serenoy said the officers arrested the trio for lacking business papers and trading in underlings.

“They were arrested for going against the laws of Uganda that prohibit the sale of undersized fish,” she said, “they did not have letters from Kenya that they’re in legal business.”

Kenyan fishermen in Lake Victoria have been facing arrests from both Uganda and Tanzanian authorities.

Serenoy said efforts were underway to negotiate for the release of the fishermen but warned that laws governing fishing in the lake must be adhered to.

“Let our fishermen also follow the law, we are trying to have them released but they should also work towards minimizing being on the wrong side of the law,” she said.

Serenoy appealed to the leadership of the Beach Management Units to create awareness among fishermen on the need to follow fishing guidelines.
