NAIROBI Kenya, Aug 25- Six data capture kits reported to have malfunctioned Saturday night when the national census got underway have been replaced, Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has said.

Oguna who addressed the press on the ongoing census Sunday morning assured contingency plans are in place to ensure a seamless exercise.

He urged Kenyans who were not listed last night when the census commenced to be calm saying the exercise will continue until Saturday next week.

“I am happy to inform you that the exercise has so gone well, and many Kenyans were at their households by the time enumerators got there and they were counted. I also understand that majority of Kenyans too are yet to be counted but they should not panic because the exercise goes until August 31,” he said.

Oguna said enumerators will interview unlisted persons between 6pm and 10 pm from Monday.

“The intensive counting was to take place only for the 2 days Saturday and Sunday and there from tomorrow, the enumerators are expected to do the exercise between 6pm to 10 pm and not from 6pm to 6am,” Oguna added.

The listing of special populations including hotel guests was concluded Saturday night, he said adding enumerators will focus on households on Sunday night as the census enters the second day beginning 6pm.

“As you are all aware, we have the special category of the population which included the people in hotels who were counted. The count of that category was concluded last night as it was just a one-night exercise,” he said.

Oguna urged those who will not have been counted by next week on Saturday to report to the nearest national administration office.

With regards to boundaries demarcation which is expected to be carried out by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) after the census, Oguna requested politicians not to politicize the census exercise by asking people to go and be counted in their villages.

He said census is not a political exercise, but a statistical exercise meant to help the government plan for its citizens.
