NAIROBI, Kenya, May 22 – A parent has moved to court to contest a move by Ministry of Education to terminate training of 3,000 teachers in over 30 colleges nationwide.
Abdishuri Adan Muhumed, says the Teachers Training Colleges discontinued the training on grounds that the students were admitted with lower grades.
The aggrieved parent argued through lawyer Steve Mogaka that by the circular dated March 15, 2018 the ministry sought to enhance access to teachers training for marginalized areas by reducing minimum entry grades to D+.
Several teacher trainees enrolled in 30 colleges and have completed the first semester.
The lawyer told Justice James Makau that without following the due process the teacher’s trainees have been informed that their training had come to an end.
Mogaka told the judge that the action to discontinue the training amounts to violation of article 47 of the Constitution and Fair Administrative Action Act.
“The students have already paid fees including through the support of Constituency Development Fund and they cannot be chased midway,” the lawyer said.
The judge directed that the status quo remains to allow the Attorney General and the 30 colleges to respond to the application within 14 days and thereafter the applicant to file his submission.
The matter will be mentioned on July 23, 2019 to confirm compliance.
