Mob kills Chuka OCS as he pursues murder suspect

According to a police report, the officers approached the butchery of the suspect to arrest him, but he raised an alarm and a mob attacked the police officers/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 2 – Chuka Officer Commanding Station (OCS) Joseph Kinyua was on Wednesday hacked to death in Kamahindi area, Tharaka Nithi County as he led a manhunt for suspects implicated in the murder of area chief Japhet Mayau Mukengu.

According to a police report, the officers approached the butchery of the suspect to arrest him, but he raised an alarm and a mob attacked the police officers.

The report states that this forced the officers to shoot in the air to disperse the mob but Kinyua was hacked several times on the head.

“The officers approached the butchery of the said suspect to arrest him but the suspect and his workers at butchery raised alarm and attacked the officers. This forced the said officers to shoot in the air severally to disperse the mob,” the report stated.

The report indicated that the suspect was also shot in the chest killing him instantly but the OCS was rushed to Tenri Hospital in Embu where he succumbed to his injuries.

Three suspects have so far been arrested by detectives following the incident.
