NAIROBI, Kenya, May 20 – Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala has finally been released from Kisumu Central Police Station where he was locked up since Friday in connection with killings in Matungu constituency in Kakamega county.

Malala was set free at around 10pm Sunday night after his supporters were teargassed by police.

In addition, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji also ordered that former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa, Matungu MP Justus Murunga and MCA Libinus Odour be released.

Haji said investigations into the matter were incomplete and evidence is insufficient.

He directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) through the Inspector General of Police to have the Matungu brutal killings thoroughly investigated and the resultant files submitted to his office for perusal and directions.

The four politicians are due to report to police on Monday.

Police in Kisumu had earlier been forced to lob teargas and fire in the air to disperse supporters of Senator Malala who were demanding his release Sunday night.
