Macharia says Naivasha-Kisumu SGR construction on course

Macharia stated that the government agreed that it was uneconomical to revive the old metre gauge railway line from Nakuru to Kisumu since it is worn out/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 14 – Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia says the proposed extension of the Standard Gauge Railway to Kisumu has not been abandoned by the government as being suggested.

Macharia stated that the government agreed that it was uneconomical to revive the old metre gauge railway line from Nakuru to Kisumu since it is worn out.

He pointed out that the government would have spent huge sums of money rehabilitating the old line which hasn’t been utilised for long and instead opted to wait for the SGR.

“The plan for SGR phase II construction are still on. After doing that Malaba wing, we shall now say that we have a profitable line all the way from Malaba to Mombasa, which can also help us fund this leg from Naivasha to Kisumu so that we do not have to struggle,” he stated.

The African Union High Commissioner for Infrastructure Development Raila Odinga that the railway line will extend to Kisumu and cover areas like Narok, Bomet, Nyamira, Sondu and added that feasibility studies are still being carried out.

“We never failed in China. It is just a matter of sequencing. The SGR is going to go from Kisumu, through Malaba to Kampala. No design has been done on that bit. That will be done jointly with the Naivasha-Kisumu route.”
