, NAIROBI, Kenya, May 22 – Kenyan writer and LGBT activist Binyavanga Wainaina is dead.

According to reports, the Caine Prize winner died at the age of 48 after a short illness.

“We lost Ken last night. We are grieving the loss…Ken was an incredible person, with an incredible wit ,” his brother James Wainaina told Capital FM News.

The wound is still fresh but we have received an outpouring of messages, from the people across the world, we are greatly comforted by them.”

He said the family is planning to have a befitting burial, details of which might be announced on Wednesday.

The activist had suffered a stroke in 2014 and the following year, he went public saying he was HIV positive.

He is among the celebrated authors in Africa.

In April 2014, Time magazine included Wainaina in its annual TIME 100 as one of the “Most Influential People in the World.”

Among his literary works include; One day I will write about this place; A memoir (2012), How to write about Africa (2006) and Nguva Na Nyoka (2016).
