Voting in Ugenya mini-poll proceeding smoothly

UGENYA, Kenya, Apr 5 – Voting kicked off smoothly In Ugenya on Friday morning with long queues witnessed at Sega Township primary school polling station.

Urenga, Nyaudenge, Udira and Kamrembo polling stations had similar queues as voters braved the chilly morning to be the first to vote.

“I woke early so that I could vote for my MO. Yes, I have been served well and I have exercised my right so that there can be change,” stated Fredrick Ouma.

“I came here at about 5.30 am and so I have been here for a while so that I could vote and be on my way afterwards,” another voter stated.

Presiding officers, their deputies together with the polling clerks spent the night in their respective polling stations to be able to commence the exercise on time.

At Sega Township the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) kit in one of the polling streams failed to work leaving voters disgruntled after waking up early to vote.

The presiding officers at the stream stated that they had notified their superiors over the delay to start the exercise occasioned by the faulty machine.

The mini election has attracted four candidates including Christopher Odhiambo Karani (ODM), David Ochieng’ (MDG), Brian Omondi (Thirdway Alliance) and Daniel Juma (GDDP).

Two candidates vying for the Ugenya parliamentary seat will however not vote in the by election as they are not registered voters in the constituency.

Brian Omondi of Third Way Alliance and Daniel Juma of GDDP are registered voters in Nairobi.

The Ugenya Returning Officer Vincent Saitabau however stated that this will not block the duo from being in the ballot papers.
