Police in Migori probe student’s shooting

The County Police Commander Joseph Nthenge stated that the student at Lwala Secondary School in Nyatike constituency died on the way to hospital/FILE

MIGORI, Kenya, Apr 17 – Police in Migori County have launched investigations into the shooting of a Form 2 student Tuesday evening.

The County Police Commander Joseph Nthenge stated that the student at Lwala Secondary School in Nyatike constituency died on the way to hospital.

He appealed to the locals to calm down as police conduct investigations. Odera Okumu, an uncle to the deceased says there was fracas in Wathonger Market when police stepped in to restore order.

Okumu explained that officers shot in the air two times to scare away the rowdy residents.

He alleged that a policewoman then fired a shot that struck the student who was standing by the roadside witnessing the incident. “The bullet ripped off his abdomen and he lost a lot of blood.”

The locals protested at the killing and wondered why police had to use live bullets to disperse the unruly crowd.

The body of the deceased was taken to the county hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
