Key ruling due Monday in Huduma Namba case a day to the launch

The ruling will come a day before the launch of the nationwide registration by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Machakos/CFM NEWS

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 1 – A key ruling in the petition seeking to suspend rollout of the National Integrated Identity Management System (NIIMS) commonly known as ‘Huduma Namba’ is set for Monday.

A three-judge bench will decide whether to halt implementation of the platform that seeks to digitise and centralise records of citizens and foreigners in Kenya.

The suit filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC), Nubian Rights Forum, and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) was heard on Friday.

According to the three bodies, the condition that no one will access government services without a Huduma Namba is a violation of fundamental rights protected under the bill of rights.

They argued that public services should not be pegged to documentation and that communities like the Kenyan Somali and Nubian risk further marginalization.

The ruling will come a day before the launch of the nationwide registration by President Uhuru Kenyatta in Machakos.

According to the government, the exercise is aimed at having one central point which will serve as the single source of truth on someone’s identity for enhanced service delivery.
