IEBC gives 21-days notice for Punguza Mizigo signature verification

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 19 – Supporters of the Punguza Mizigo initiative sponsored by the Thirdway Alliance have until May 9 to verify their details contained in a petition to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a statement posted on its social media platform, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said that as part of the due diligence in the verification exercise, the Commission has published the particulars of the persons said to be supporters of the initiative on the IEBC website.

He explained that the objective of the publication is to provide an opportunity to any person who may claim that his details were forwarded by Thirdway Alliance to IEBC without his or her consent.

“The Commission received a draft bill and a record of supporters of amendment of the Constitution through popular initiative from Punguza Mizigo promoters…The objective of the publication is to afford would be supporters of the initiative an opportunity to confirm that indeed the Commission is seized of their particulars.”

“For any queries or observations, please provide the Commission with your full names, ID number and telephone contacts at the address below or report to any of the IEBC closest to you within a period of 21 days from the date hereof and in any event not later than close of business on 9th May 2019,” read the statement which was posted on April 18.

The Punguza Mizigo initiative seeks to strengthen the Senate.

It further calls for the reduction of the public wage bill and recurrent expenditure through the reducing the number of MPs from the current 416 to 147 and replacing the 290 constituencies with the 47 single constituencies for purposes of parliamentary election to the Senate and the National Assembly.
