NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 5 – The Nairobi County Government has started clearing drainages in several flood-prone areas in the city ahead of the long rains expected to begin this month.

Governor Mike Sonko stated that City Hall must be able to anticipate and plan for potential disasters ahead of the expected long rains in Nairobi.
“I will not allow any laxity or laziness. We must work round the clock and ensure the drainage system if fixed even after heavy rains,” Sonko told his cabinet.
Among the estates identified as floods hotspots are Umoja, Eastleigh, South C, South B, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Eastleigh, Donholm, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Ruai, Utawala, Mukuru and Kibera slums.
Others are Kileleshwa, Highrise estate and areas along Outer Ring Road.
Sonko directed the newly appointed Environment County Executive Vesca Kangogo and her new Transport counterpart Hitan Majevdia to oversee the exercise to ensure no life or property is lost as a result of floods.
“We must take our work seriously and ensure that the voters who voted us in enjoy good leadership,” he said.
Disaster Unit Chief Officer Anne Kananu said her team will ensure the county is well prepared to handle disasters.
“We are coordinating with other sectors well in ensuring that everything is achieved perfectly,” she said
