NAIROBI, Kenya Apr 9 – The newly posted Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng has presented his credentials to President Uhuru Kenyatta, effectively kicking off his diplomatic mission in the country, with a firm pledge to strengthen relations.
Wu presented the credentials at State House on Monday, at a ceremony attended by Deputy President William Ruto, Head of the Civil Service Joseph Kinyua and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Administrative Secretary Ababu Namwamba.
Ambassador Wu pledged to fully represent his country—the People’s Republic of China—while ensuring mutual respect and benefit to both countries.
“I will try my best to ensure our friendly cooperation between the two countries remain stronger,” he told the president, who assured him of full cooperation.
“I look to you as a friend and somebody whom we will work closely to ensure that we abhieve our objectives,” said the president.
Ambassador Wu, who arrived in the country two weeks ago, is also the Permanent Representative of China to the UNEP and the UN-Habitat.
He has committed to strengthen further Kenya-China cooperation, particularly the Belt and Road initiative (BRI) which will be held in Beijing later this month.
“The BRI is expected to increase Kenya’s agricultural exports to China and enhance the two countries collaboration in the fields of capacity building, infrastructure, digital and smart cities,” he said in a statement from the Nairobi embassy, when he landed in Kenya.
Wu said he “he believes that African people’s vision for a prosperous continent will be fulfilled through the pursuance of mutual benefit and win-win outcomes.”
He said China is willing to engage Kenya in various forms of tripartite cooperation, “as long as it is beneficial to Kenya and oriented by Kenyans.”
“One of his major assignments is to further implement the consensus between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta,” the statement issued on his arrival in the capital Nairobi.
The two leaders, the embassy said, agreed to upgrade the ongoing bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
