MOMBASA, Kenya, Apr 24 – British national Jermaine Grant has been found guilty of being in possession of explosives making materials.
Grant, who was arrested in 2011 alongside his wife Warda Breik Islam and Frank Ngala in Kisauni with powder and electric wires suspected to be used for making bombs, will now be sentenced on May 9.
On Wednesday, Mombasa Chief Magistrate Evans Makori who delivered the judgement on behalf of Senior Principal Magistrate Joyce Gandani who has since moved to Kibera Law Courts, acquitted Warda and Ngala.
Grant, Warda and Ngala were accused of three counts of being in possession of materials used in making explosives, conspiracy to commit a felony and being in possession of explosives.
In her judgement Gandani said Grant was guilty of being found with the materials being used for making explosives.
On the day of arrest on December 20, 2011 Grant was found with acetone material, hydrogen peroxide, ammonium nitrate, sulphur sublimed, 11cm pieces of electric wire and a flash disk containing explosive making tutorials.
By the time of arrest, Grant was said to have been married to Warda and they were staying in Kishada in Kisauni, Mombasa County.

Gandani said Grant was aware of the materials in the house in Kisauni, but Warda and Ngala were innocent.
“The literature in the flash disk was linked to the chemicals found in the house. The first accused person (Grant) was therefore aware of the explosive in the house in Kishada in Kisauni. He is guilty of the offence,” Gandani’s judgement read in part.
The house in Kisauni where Grant was arrested in 2011 is said to be the same house where UK most wanted terror suspect Samantha Lewthwaite, famously known as the White widow, also lived before he sneaked out of Kenya.
Grant is already serving a nine years sentence at Shimo la Tewa Prison after he was convicted of forgery in order to get Kenyan identification documents.
