Prepare for grueling battle in Embakasi South, Wiper tells ODM

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 5- Wiper party has told  the Orange Democratic Movement Party to prepare for a tough battle in the upcoming Embakasi South by election to be held on 5 April.

Speaking after its candidate was  cleared  by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), party leader  Kalonzo Musyoka said the Embakasi South seat belongs to Wiper and exuded confidence that Julius  Mawathe will win regardless of who vies for the same seat.

“This is a  big day for our party, and I want to assure that nothing will stop Mawathe from winning this election. The seat belongs to him and our friends should be ready for a serious race; we are confident  that Embakasi South residents know what he has so far done for them and they will come in large numbers to vote for him again,” Kalonzo said.

He was seconded by former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama and Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jr who lashed out at the ODM for fielding a candidate for the same seat, yet the two parties belong to NASA coalition.

“We will do whatever it takes to ensure the Wiper candidate retains his seat come April. It is so bad that those we call our brothers could not leave the only seat that wiper has in Nairobi to them and now two people from the same coalition will be competing against each other,” said Muthama.

Senator Mutula Jr called for a peaceful election asking those competing with Mawathe to accept the outcome once the by election is held.

“We will campaign day in day out to ensure Mawathe wins this seat once again. It will not and it cannot be taken away from him because we know Embakasi residents are right behind him and you will prove to everyone that he is the leader you all want,” Kilonzo urged.

The wiper party had earlier urged the ODM party to withdraw their candidate and support Wiper’s contender,  but their plea was not heeded to.

Mawathe will be facing  off with his bitter rival from ODM Irshad Sumra who was cleared on Monday  and  other 3 candidates including the former Taj Mall owner Rameshchandria Gorasia who will be vying on a Democratic Party ticket.

The seat fell vacant after Mawathe’s August  8 2017 election  was nullified  last December by the supreme court.
