, MOMBASA, Kenya, Nov 15 – Some 202 containers containing maize contaminated with aflatoxin have been impounded at a Container Freight Station in Mombasa.

The containers were imported into the country on September 22 last year.

They contain 105,040 bags of 90 kilogrammes each.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) camped at the CFS on Thursday.

According to the officers, the maize was declared unfit for human consumption by Kenya Bureau of Standards on August 23 this year.

“The bags have been lying in this CFS since last year. They were declared unfit for human consumption, but the importer is seeking ways to sell to millers,” said an officer at the scene who sought anonymity.

The maize, according to the documents, was imported from Mozambique.
