NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 7 – The dawn fire that broke out Wednesday at the Gikomba Market has been contained.
According to the Kenya Red Cross Society, the brigade from the Nairobi County Government contained the inferno that broke out at about 4am.
Through its Twitter account, KRCS said it was now carrying out an assessment on the incident.
“Fire contained, thanks to Nairobi City County fire brigade team. No casualties reported. #RedCross to carry out an assessment,” it stated.
According to Nairobi Deputy Commandant Richard Kerich, the fire broke out from one of the affected structures before spreading fast to others.
He however reported no injuries but said that the cause of the fire is not yet known, and investigations are underway.
In June this year, at least 15 people died and more than 60 were injured following a night fire in a section of the market.
The previous year, President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a probe after two fire incidents rocked the market in a span of nine months.
