Court orders 15 detained until Nov 12 in KCSE exam probe

The suspects did not however take plea when they appeared before Resident Magistrate Margaret Nafula since investigations are incomplete/CFM NEWS

KISII, Kenya, Nov 6 – Fifteen suspects have been arraigned before a court in Ogembo, Kisii for allegedly engaging in irregularities during this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Fourteen suspects were initially apprehended but one of them was arrested later while another is still at large.

They are accused of being in possession of examination materials and aiding and abetting a crime, contrary to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) Act.

The suspects did not however take plea when they appeared before Resident Magistrate Margaret Nafula since investigations are incomplete.

Nafula ordered that they should be remanded at Nyamarambe Police Station until Monday next week to allow completion of investigations.

She further directed the prosecution to supply documentary evidence intended to be used in the case to defence lawyer Kerosi Ondieki.

The suspects were arrested after they allegedly attempted to smuggle foreign materials into two examination centres.

KNEC however said no candidate was exposed to any foreign material by the time the ulterior motives were thwarted.

Some 664,550 candidates sat the Mathematics Paper 1 and Chemistry Paper 1 as the exams kicked off Monday.
