Senate seeks public input in Prevention of Terrorism Bill

In a public notice appearing in the media, the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations chaired by Garrisa Senator Yusuf Haji said the it will hold a public hearing to receive views at the County Hall/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 13 – Members of the public have until Thursday to make their submissions in support or against the Prevention of Terrorism Amendment Bill 2018 which is currently before the Senate.

In a public notice appearing in the media, the Senate Standing Committee on National Security, Defence and Foreign Relations chaired by Garrisa Senator Yusuf Haji said the it will hold a public hearing to receive views at the County Hall.

The Haji led team says the public can also mail or drop their memorandum to the Office of the Clerk of the Senate before 5pm on Thursday.

The amendment Bill is sponsored by Nominated Senator Naomi Waqo who wants all institution administrators mandated and charged with the duty of ensuring measures is put in place in their respective institutions to prevent radicalization and violent extremism.

Under the Bill, the schools administrators will be required to keep updated records of all their students and ensure teachers are sensitized to detect extremism
