Raila: Murders targeting young women worrying

“Some of his songs were revolutionary, while others were about love. They used to teach people about love, but we are seeing different things in our current Kenya. We are seeing young women being beaten and killed. Kamaru would not have wanted to see such things,” Odinga said/PSCU

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 11 – Opposition leader Raila Odinga has raised concern over the recent wave of killings targeting young women.

Odinga specifically highlighted the killing of Monica Kimani, whose body was found in a bathtub in her Kilimani apartment and that of Sharon Otieno, the Rongo University student who was seven months pregnant.

Addressing mourners during the burial of legendary musician Joseph Kamaru in Murang’a County attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto, Odinga urged Kenyans to borrow from some of his songs that preached love and speak against such vices.

“Some of his songs were revolutionary, while others were about love. They used to teach people about love, but we are seeing different things in our current Kenya. We are seeing young women being beaten and killed. Kamaru would not have wanted to see such things,” Odinga said.

“That is animosity. Those who have been killing young women are evil.”

Both cases left many Kenyans puzzled due to the brutal manner the women lost their lives and have led to arrests of notable people.

Kimani’s throat was slit, hands tied, and mouth masked while Otieno was raped and stabbed eight times.

In both cases, police have arrested suspects who are facing murder charges.

In Otieno’s murder, Migori Governor Okoth Obado is still in remand awaiting a ruling on his bail application on Friday, after he pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Other suspects including his personal assistants are also in custody.

Kimani’s murder case is set to kick off on Monday when the prime suspects, journalist Jacque Maribe and her fiancé Joseph Irungu alias Jowie take plea.

They are currently held in remand prison.

Other than women, children too have not been spared with the wave of abduction and subsequent killings.

The latest incident was the murder of a nine-year-old girl in Meru, was just another reminder of how Kenyan children are increasingly becoming vulnerable late last month.

Maribel Kapolon, police said, was tortured before she was killed by her abductors. She was a daughter to Resident Magistrate of Githongo Law Courts, Carolyne Kemei.

She went missing for 10 days, only for her body to be recovered in Gitoro Forest within the county.
