NAIROBI, Kenya Oct 26 – One person died on Friday morning when a building under construction collapsed in Malindi town, police said, as a search and rescue got underway for others trapped in the rubble.
According to Kilifi Police boss Fredrick Ochieng, an unknown number of people are believed to be in the rubble, but he said eight had been rescued and rushed to hospital.
“They include a child, four women and three men and they have all been rushed to nearby hospitals,” Ochieng told reporters.
Witnesses said the building went down at about 5 am at Barani area, as soon as the workers started streaming in to take up various roles.
Volunteers from the Kenya Red Cross were on site to coordinate the search and rescue operation.
