NEMA officials impound 1.7 tonnes of banned plastic bags

MOMBASA, Kenya, Oct 21 – Officers from the National Environment Management Authority have impounded banned plastic bags that were imported into the country from Tanzania.

Mombasa County NEMA boss Stephen Wambua said the total tonnage of the bags is about 1.7 tonnes, with each sack containing bags weighing about 100 kilos.

Wambua says his officers were acting on a tip-off that the cargo was being imported into the country by a bus company plying the Mombasa-Dar es Salaam route.

“We arrived at the bus station at around 8pm on Friday evening and impounded the 17 bags. We waited for about three hours but the owner did not show up,” he told Capital FM News on phone.

The bags were taken to the Central Police Station as they began the process of tracing the importer.
