Ex-PS Ekai, Kipchoge Keino due in court over Olympics scandal

, NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 15 – Three former top sports officials are due in court Monday morning over the misappropriation of Sh55 million during the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Those due in court are former Sports Principal Secretary Richard Ekai, the Rio Games Chief De Mission Stephen Soi, National Olympic Committee of Kenya Secretary General Francis Kinyili and former National Olympics Committee of Kenya Chairman Kipchoge Keino – who was spared arrest.

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario, who is Kenya’s ambassador to Austria, was also ordered back to the country to face charges.

Charges facing them include making unauthorised payments, over-payment of allowances and purchasing tickets worth Sh22 million which were not used by athletes or officials in the chaotic trip that was full of joyriders.

The charges also include overpayment of allowances amounting to Sh15.9 million and incurring expenditure on unauthorized persons amounting to Sh6.5 million.
