DP Ruto, Raila renew rivalry as their allies face off

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 1 – Barely a day after Deputy President William Ruto launched a scathing attack on Opposition leader Raila Odinga claiming that he is behind a scheme to have him kicked out of the ruling Jubilee Party, the NASA leader has come out to state he is not interested in his post or any other in government.

Speaking when he opened Katani Hospital in Machakos County, Odinga said certain leaders were panicking following the onslaught against graft which has registered high profile causalities across all sectors of society.

“The fight on corruption is what is causing jitters, that is why some people are making so much noise, they have panicked. But I have often said that you have no reason to be afraid if you know you have not done anything wrong.”

“You don’t have to be afraid of Raila, I don’t want anybody’s position, I have the best interest of Kenyans at heart,” he said.

At the same time, Ruto who is on a tour of the Coast asked the Opposition to stop pretending to be the ones spearheading the fight against corruption.

“The Constitution is clear; we have independent institutions charged with the fight against corruption, resources wastage and mismanagement,” he said.

He said if the leaders in the Opposition have no agenda for Kenya, then they do not need to politicise the fight against corruption.

“Importantly, leaders should focus on discussing issues that would transform Kenya rather than wasting time talking about others,” he said.

“Our politics is development focused. Our main agenda is to empower all Kenyans economically. We are not like those other greedy politicians who waste their time to talk about others,” he said while addressing the public at Taita Taveta County during the launch of the Voi Modern Market.

ODM Deputy Leader Hassan Joho, Minority Whip in the National Assembly Junet Mohammed, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna had earlier in the day hit back at the Deputy President’s allegations that their party leader wanted him out of the Jubilee.

Junet, who is also the ODM Elections Director came to the defence of his party leader saying that he has never been interested in meddling in Jubilee Party affairs.

“We are not chasing him from anywhere. He is running away from his shadow. Let him not start blame games when he has decided it’s time for him to leave because it is normal for him to leave parties. So for him to leave Jubilee is not a big deal for us,” the Minority Whip said.

“Any other person is just an accompaniment to that deal just like the way we are. So let him not call Raila any other name like a conman, mganga (witchdoctor), kitendawili (riddle)….Raila is not his equal,” Junet added.

The opposition party reiterated that Odinga’s resolve to work with Jubilee Party leader and President Uhuru Kenyatta to fix the country and unite the people of Kenya is unstoppable.

ODM Secretary General added; “The Party Leader @RailaOdinga has never even dreamed of becoming a Member of that party. However, his resolve to work with Jubilee Party leader and President Uhuru Kenyatta to fix the country and unite the people of Kenya is unstoppable.”

Joho who is also the Mombasa Governor cautioned the Deputy President against insulting Odinga they are not equals politically.

“How do you call Raila Odinga a conman? What do you have to be conned? If it’s about political strength then you cannot compare Raila Odinga with William Ruto. William Ruto is at our level, and you will see the dust we will show him,” he stated.
